Mormon Friends, Gay Friends

Regular readers will recall that I am trying to collect all entries from the PostSecret project that explicitly reference Mormonism. You can see all the entries I’ve collected here.

I honestly believe my Mormon friends would be more accepting of my homosexuality than my gay friends would be of my Mormonism.

Depends on who your friends are, of course, but this is totally believable.

  • I love this one. I think it’s my favorite Mormon PostSecret yet. It’s one of my favorites in general, especially in light of the events of the last few weeks.

A friend of mine recently said that her missionary efforts consisted (almost exclusively) of running interference for the church. Saying things like “We’re not all like that,” because everyone she spoke to about the church had such a negative viewpoint about it. It really bothers me that she feels she has to do that.

Katie, I’ve had missionaries come up to me and start talking to me. I nicely explain that I know about their religion and I’m not interested. They then ask me why I’m not interested. This leads me to talk about the things in Mormonism I don’t believe, particularly values around GLBT people and alcohol. I could see how those missionaries might feel like they are then running interference for the church, but they brought it upon themselves. If they would have just said, “ok, have a nice day” instead, they would not have had to stick up for the church.

And to be fair, I’m lucky in having known, online and in person, some wonderful, liberal Mormons. 99% of the population who isn’t Mormon haven’t had these experiences. If you are put as a missionary in a place like Minneapolis, San Fransisco, New York City, or Portland, you are going to run across people who only see LDS as anti-Prop 8, pro-Mitt Romney, and like what they have seen on South Park. Until there are Mormons with national exposure sticking up for GLBT people, that isn’t going to change. Catholics have much the same problem.
