New Years Resolutions

New Years Resolutions? I don’t have any. Nothing firm anyway. I certainly don’t have a specific list of things to accomplish.

But there is one thing I want to work on throughout the next year. I want to wake up earlier. That’s it. Nothing specific, just earlier.

Why do I want to wake up earlier?

I want to be more productive, generally, and I think getting up earlier will accomplish that for me. I’m terrible at getting out of bed in the morning. I’m snoozing five or six times, getting to work later than I’d like to. I’m staying up late, but still never finding time to do some things I’d like to.

What, specifically, will I do if I wake up earlier?

Any number of things. Maybe I’ll eat breakfast (something more than string cheese – not that there’s anything wrong with string cheese, YUM!). Maybe I’ll go for a jog. Maybe i’ll pal around with KP for a while if she’s up. Maybe I’ll write a blog post. Maybe I’ll just surf the interwebs. Maybe I’ll hang some curtain rods. Maybe I’ll go to work earlier. Maybe I’ll watch the morning news. Maybe I’ll do the dishes.

***

I’ve made a number of new years resolutions throughout the years, most of which I’ve failed at. This time, I’m not setting a specific goal. I’m not hoping to get up at any specific time to accomplish any particular tasks. I just generally want to become more productive, and I think waking up earlier will help me do that.

Wish me luck.  I’ll need it.

Oh, and just for some relative comparison – what time are y’all getting out of bed these days?

Tues, Wed, and Thurs I get up at 7:40 to get to work by 8:30. But that’s if I’m driving, which I’m not suppose to do, but that’s what usually happens because if I drive I can sleep in later.

Monday and Friday I work from home, so I get up at 8:20 to start working by 8:30. I also often take a nap during my lunch break.

On Saturday’s I tend to sleep in, to like 10:30-11:30.

Sunday’s I have people over to my house, so I need to get up at 9:00-10:00. Sometimes I go to church, then I have to get up at 9:00 and do the work to get the house ready the day before. Which means I don’t make it to church very often. I also don’t have a home church right now, which also keeps me from going to church.

Now you know more about me than you ever wanted to.

  • My alarm goes off at 5:15 on weekdays… 90% of the time I’ve been up for 20 minutes before it goes off. Weekends I get up at about 6:00 or 6:30. Whish I didn’t… and since I’ve been using the CPAP.. 6.5 hours of sleep and I’m up, no matter of I go to bed at 8:00 or 11:00.

I get up when the kid gets up, sometimes 7:30, sometimes 6:00. I’d love to get up earlier, but the days I sleep till 7:30 just make up for the days I get up at 6:00.

Thankfully I work from home, so once the wife and kid are out of the house, I can do all that stuff I’d like to do in the mornings. RSS catchup, breakfast, coffee, bathroom. It works very well for me.

    6, sometimes 6:30.

i have, and always will be a morning person.

if you are a night person, maybe you will be most productive at night?

then in the morning you can just be lazy. or as lazy as KP will allow you to be.

  • @Kassie – jeez, you’re like a teenager! 11:30? sheesh!
@Sank – 6.5 hours? hmm. not quite enough. Are you productive during your early morning hours?
@Moe – sounds like you’ve got a good routine going!
@Marla – you’d think it would work out that way – I’ve always been a night owl. Anything I do at 6:00 AM I can do at 10:00 PM, right? Well, in reality, not so much. When I was single, I would go out for late-night jogs all the time (the trails are completely deserted at 2:00 AM, btw..), but now that I’m married and have a kid, if I haven’t gone jogging by about 7:00 PM, it’s not happening. But I would totally go jogging at 6:00 AM. I might make myself a big 6:30 AM breakfast and feel good about it, but I’d feel guilty frying a pan of bacon at 11:30 PM, know what I mean?

  • I’m a night owl. I’m rarely in bed before midnight, much less asleep by then. 1 or 2 is typical. I’m rarely up before 7. On the weekend it can be as late as 10 or so, depending on what’s going on and whether my wife gets up with the kids and lets me sleep. The kids don’t wake up until 8 most days (this morning was 8:30 for one and 9 for the other).

I get up whenever the baby does, which is anytime between about 7:40 and 9.

And I disagree–bacon is acceptable at any hour!

Liam seems like enjoy waking up well before I want to. He is my alarm clock that I wish I could press snooze on 5-6 times.
