So after much difficulty, I finally hired a dude (the only guy I could even get a bid from…) to come replace the step flashing around the dormer on our house. When I asked the guy to replace the step flashing, I could tell he was skeptical that the step flashing was actually the problem. I kept talking about the step flashing, and he kept talking about all the other places it could be leaking. I could tell that he was expecting to get up on the roof and find some other source of leak. But he called me at work today and said, “You were right. I’m sorry I doubted you. This step flashing is asinine. It’s just completely wrong.”
You read that correctly. Asinine.
He had to take the vinyl siding off the sides of the dormer to get the flashing in there correctly. Here’s what it looked like at the end of his work today:
I’m glad I hired a pro for this one. I just would have done a totally half-assed job – that’s just how I roll (whatever that means).
I spent a while admiring the original wood that is hidden underneath the vinyl siding. Sigh. I sure would love to rip all the vinyl off the side of the house and restore the original wood siding…. but…. well… maybe that will be a chore for some other house, huh?
