Hardwood Floors?

For the first time in the five years we’ve owned this house, Mel and I took a peek underneath the wall-to-wall carpeting.

What do you think, oh wise interwebs??? Are these 100 year-old hardwood floors salvageable?

I think so.

Huzzah!!!  Looks like we found ourselves a project for next week!

  1. Was it the Rane's who a resto job on their floors a few months ago? I recall someone I know doing this project not too long ago with great results. Good luck!

  2. Yea, the Rane's did theirs a few months ago with fantastic results. Also, the Wortleys (did you know them? They probably moved in after you left..) just did their 2nd story floor as well with great results.

  3. While they probably are, speaking as someone who has had wall to wall hardwood floors for the last 4 years-they are not worth the upkeep. They look amazing, but are a major pain.

  4. @K Dowd – I agree. I'm totally a fan of hardwoods. When I've lived in a place with hardwoods, it does seem like dustballs seem to grow out of nowhere, but I'm also a total slob.

  5. I think your floors will look amazing when they are refinished!! And I agree that hardwood is sooooo much easier to keep clean than carpets, especially if you spill stuff or have a baby that spits up all over the place.:) And I think the closet project looks great too.

  6. @Kat – thanks. You're our floor refinishing inspiration. Also, we're going to come stay at your house for a week while the polyurethane is drying, ok?

  7. Maybe I'm weird but I think our rooms with hard wood are sooooooooo much easier to keep clean than the carpet 🙂 I think the floors would look great!!! Good luck 🙂

  8. Purge the carpet. Hardwood is the only way to go. Carpets are "easier" only because you can be oblivious to the fact that you're living in a giant pile of dirt, hair, and dead skin cells with wall to wall carpet. Ignorance may be bliss, but it's also disgusting.
