ICE DAMS?

QUERY: Hey Reuben, what’s with Gnorman and that cup sitting up there on your window???

ANSWER: Oh nothing…. Gnorman is just using it to catch all the rainwater POURING into my house through the window is all…

Mel and I were watching TV when we started to hear a dripping behind us, and we discovered that rain was DRIPPING into our house!  YIKES!  My first thought was “You’ve got to be kidding me!  Fixing this house has been a life-consuming chore for the past several months and now THIS!?!?!”

Anyway, I didn’t really know why water was leaking in the house, but I started to suspect it was because of an ice dam on our roof.  So I got out the ladder and started hacking away at the ice dam with a hammer.  Which was both awkward and a little bit humiliating.

I think our house is particularly susceptible to ice dams because of the way the roof pitch gets really shallow right at the edges.  Also, we know we’ve got some pretty poor ventilation from the soffits to the attic space, which is really common in 1.5 story houses like ours.

So… anyway, we’re a little peeved that it’s raining in our living room.  We’ve known for a while that we might have some leaking happening on that side of the house, but this is the first time we’ve seen water. We were planning on doing some repairs this summer, but I guess it just became way more critical….  Also, remember this photo from when I went climbing on my roof?  Notice how someone just nailed the shingles down directly top of the shingles???  well… no wonder that side of the house is a little rotten and we have water inside our walls…..
