Broken Bikes

Do you ever get the nagging feeling that you own at least 10 bikes and not a one of them works correctly because you can’t ever find the time to do bike maintenance?

Honestly, I’ve got about 9 or 10 bikes in “working” condition – but I wouldn’t feel comfortable lending one out to anyone because they’ve all got something wrong I like to keep an eye on…  I don’t mind riding them – because I’m familiar with them – I know just how much wobble in the bottom bracket I’m comfortable riding with before it’s time to stop, for example.  But if someone asked me to borrow a bike, I don’t have a single one I could lend them without giving them a heads up warning about something they need to watch for while they ride.
Acutally, now that I’m typing, I’m realizing that our old Schwinn Suburban tanks are probably the most reliable thing I’ve got right now – not much of a commuter bike, though.
Sigh.  It’s hard to find time to do bike maintenance when you don’t even have a functioning shower in your home…  Mel’s promised me that I won’t have to finish our other home renovation project until after I’ve had time to get at least 3 or 4 of the bikes working again.

  • ha, ha…we have the same problem. Currently, I don't really have a bike to ride because there is something major wrong with all of my commuter bikes. Therefore, I am riding a rusty old coaster brake bike that is much too small for me.

  • Jules, nice to know I'm not alone…
