While I was a missionary for the LDS church, I taught that the Bible was an example of how God revealed His will to us. I taught that God spoke directly to prophets who dutifully recorded these revelations.
“Moses is a good example,” I would say. “God spoke to Moses ‘face to face,’ who then wrote about these revelations in the first five books of the Bible. Thus, the Bible is the Word of God.”
I knew it wasn’t that simple, of course. I knew that the LDS printing of the King James Version of the Bible includes footnotes that reference Greek or Hebrew versions of the text for clarification. I knew that the footnotes contained numerous Joseph Smith Translations that claimed to correct earlier textual errors. I knew that the 8th article of faith stated: We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly.
But I sure wanted it to be that simple…
